Compound Description Common Application
Buna-N
(Nitrile/NBR)
Standards for most applications: Good resistance to petroleum, hydrocarbons, fuels. Widely used with most oils, hydraulic fluids, and alcohol. Poor resistance to sunlight, weathering and ozone. The least expensive but most readily available material. Petroleum Oil Seals
Hydraulic Fluid Seals
Water/Greases
Transmission fluid Seals
Fluorocarbon
(FKM/Viton®)
Stability and compatibility with a wide range of fluid and chemical types. Excellent temperature and chemical resistance. Excellent mechanical and physical properties. Low compression set and low gas permeability. Not for use with Acetone, Skydrol, or ethyl Acetate. Vacuum Seals
Acids/ Fuels
High heat Chemicals/Solvent
Silicone
(SIL)
Compatible with a variety of fluids, air oxygen, ozone, etc. Broad temperature range. Odorless/non-toxic. Resistance to sun and ozone. Fungus resistance. Poor tear and abrasion strength. Poor resistance to oils. Dry heat Alcohol/Oxygen Electrical/Medical
Low temperature
Ethylene
Propylene
(EPDM)
For hot water, steam, alcohols, acids, alkalis, keytones, phosphate esters, brake fluids, drive belts. Resistance to sunlight, weathering and ozone. Poor resistance to petroleum oils and fuel. Good heat and compression set resistance. Steam/Hot Water
Hydraulic/Skydrol
Auto brake
Alcohol/Greases
Neoprene
(Chloroprene/
CR)
Generally used for refrigeration, freon gases, carbon dioxide gases, chlorine, ozone, sunlight exposure and drive belts. Good resistance to petroleum oils. Low compression set and good abrasion strength. Good resistance to weathering, sunlight and ozone Refrigeration Seals
Freon/Air Condition
Engine coolants

Polyurethane
(Urethane/PU)
Highly resistant to oil swell, ozone, oxidation and abrasion. Highly resilient and having a high tensile strength and elongation properties. An excellent choice for hydraulic seals using petroleum based oils. Hydraulic seals in oil such as u-cups, o-rings, wipers.
Highly Saturated
Nitrile
(HSN/HNBR)
Excellent abrasion resistance, compression set, tensile and tear properties. A step above standard NBR in that it exhibits resistance to ozone, sunlight and other atmospheric conditions. Vastly improved resistant to heat aging. For various petroleum fluids. Hydraulic seals such as u-cups, vee packings, wipers, back-up rings.
Fluorosilocone
(FS)
Recommended for extreme temperature applications, petroleum oils, fuels and lubricants, synthetic ester and diester lubricants. Wide range of fluid and chemical resistance. Large temperature range. Aircraft fuel systems
Jet fuel/Gasoline
Petroleum oils
Synthetic jet oil
